AUSTRAC enrolment is the first formal step in becoming a compliant Tranche 2 reporting entity, and it has a hard deadline: 29 July 2026. Until you've enrolled, you can't submit reports or demonstrate that you have an active AML/CTF program, and late enrolment is itself a contravention of the Act. This step-by-step guide to AUSTRAC enrolment for Tranche 2 walks you through what to prepare, the steps involved, and the mistakes that catch firms out.
Before you begin: do you need to enrol or register?
For most Tranche 2 businesses the answer is enrolment, not registration. Separate registration is generally only required for specific activities such as remittance and virtual asset services. If you're a law firm, accounting practice, real estate agency, conveyancer or trust and company service provider, you almost certainly need to enrol, and you should choose the Tranche 2 enrolment pathway, not the older Tranche 1 registration process, which is a different thing entirely.
What to gather before you log in
Enrolment happens through AUSTRAC Online, and the form is comprehensive. The single biggest time-saver is having your information ready before you start, firms that prepare cut the process from days of back-and-forth to under an hour. Broadly, you'll need your business identity and structure details (ABN/ACN, legal structure, ownership), your designated services (the specific activities that make you a reporting entity), your key personnel including your nominated compliance officer, the domain names of any websites through which you provide designated services, basic financial information such as approximate annual turnover, and any regulatory history. Depending on your structure, particularly for groups or entities using special purpose vehicles, additional information may be required, so it's worth confirming how your group should be treated before you start.
The steps to AUSTRAC enrolment
The process itself is reasonably linear. You create an AUSTRAC Online account using your firm's email address and verify it via the email link. You select the option to enrol as a new reporting entity and choose the Tranche 2 pathway. You enter your business details, then specify your designated services, this is the heart of the form, and accuracy matters because it defines your obligations. You nominate your compliance officer, review everything, and submit.
A practical note: the AUSTRAC Business Profile Form uses conditional logic, so the questions you see adapt to your entity type and the services you select. This is why having your designated services clearly mapped beforehand makes the whole thing flow, you're confirming decisions you've already made rather than working them out live in the form.
The mistakes that catch firms out
Three recur often enough to call out. The first is nominating a junior staff member as compliance officer, AUSTRAC expects a senior person with real authority, and a nominal appointment creates compliance risk rather than resolving it. The second is treating enrolment as the finish line, it triggers your obligations, it doesn't fulfil them, and your program must be operational from when you enrol. The third is simply leaving it too late, the information takes longer to assemble than people expect, and 29 July is not a deadline with any give in it.
After you enrol with AUSTRAC
Enrolment confirmed is the starting line, not the finish. From here the real work is operating your AML/CTF program: applying customer due diligence on every matter, screening, monitoring, and being ready to lodge suspicious matter and threshold transaction reports. AUSTRAC has been clear that it doesn't expect perfection on day one, but it does expect realistic, effective plans and genuine effort to manage risk, so a documented implementation plan is itself valuable.
If building and running your program is where you'd like support, AMLDetect provides it end to end. Your program developed for you free with every plan, the KYC and screening technology to operate it, AUSTRAC starter pack support, and full training.
